Are we born confident?

Although often believed & spoken about, confidence is not solely something you're born with. Yes, we all have personality traits that impact how extroverted, resilient or how exuberant we are – but confidence isn’t only down to this.

In fact, confidence is a combination of innate traits and learned behaviours that develop over time. While some individuals may naturally possess certain predispositions that contribute, confidence is also influenced by experiences, upbringing, and environment.

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Nature vs. Nurture: Confidence can be influenced by both genetic factors and environmental influences. Some people may be born with a temperament that predisposes them to be more confident or outgoing, but environmental factors such as upbringing, socialization, and life experiences play a significant role in shaping confidence levels.

  2. Learned Behaviours: Confidence can be learned and developed through practice and experience. By setting goals, facing challenges, and overcoming obstacles, individuals can build self-confidence and belief in their abilities.

  3. Self-Perception: Confidence is closely tied to self-perception and self-belief. How you see yourself and your capabilities significantly impacts your confidence levels. Positive self-talk, self-awareness, and realistic self-appraisal can contribute to greater confidence.

  4. Skill Development: Confidence often stems from competence. As you develop skills, knowledge, and expertise in various areas of your life, you naturally become more confident in your abilities.

  5. Mindset: A growth mindset, which emphasizes the belief that abilities can be developed through effort and perseverance, can foster confidence. Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than threats to your self-worth can bolster confidence levels.

So, while some of us may be a little more predisposed, our confidence is not fixed. It's a dynamic quality that can be cultivated and strengthened through being more self-aware, through daily practice, and personal development.
